Is is ok to do the Windows Update (for XP)? I THINK I saw some mention that this uptake may affect the "Platform" but I am not sure. Has anyone downloaded it yet? If I am not supposed to download it, how do I make the autoupdate icon from popping up each day? I want normal updates, just afraid of this one. Thanks! ***Answer updated 12/10/2004 -- please scroll down to end of this thread. ****

I received an email from the "company otherwise not named" and it seems that maybe we can now install the service pack 2. The email was a little vague and confusing, so I'm trying to get confirmation from my supervisor but she wasn't aware we were told not to install it in the first place.
Hmmmm, right-hand == left-hand, shall the two ever meet?

I received a detailed memo outlining the steps necessary before enabling the automatic update feature which will allow the Service Pack to install. - Make certain system meets minimal system requirements of 64 MB Ram, 233 Mz processor speed, and 1.8 GB hard disk space
- Remove all temporary internet files
- Run adware/spyware removal programs
- Enable Microsoft Auto Updates
I would add 2 additional steps before enabling the auto updates: - Back up your user.aco file to floppy or CD
- Create a System Restore point
My memo came from the manager of technical client services in Phoenix. I plan to do this later tonight. DH works for a company which uses the Cisco VPN (a product of the nameless company); he updated to Service Pack 2 last week and has had no problem.

I'm sorry if this is an incredibly stupid question but I'm still not clear about step #3 here -- do we run our adware/spyware programs to remove adware and spyware or do we uninstall the adware/spyware programs from our computers?

Oops, sorry for being vague there.
The instructions meant that one should run the programs to remove the spyware/adware. I regularly run Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy, plus I use the immunize feature of Spybot as well as Spyware Blaster to prevent spyware from installing, so the Yahoo scan only detected 17 items. All were quickly and easily removed.
edited 12/10/2004: I now prefer SpySubtract by Intermute. Google it. I'll update this post w/a link, or find a more current article about parasite programs on the new lph cyberjournal forum -- see link in announcements portion of this forum.
