For example, if I have Notepad open, to pull out one of my doc "normals" can I close it without using the mouse on the red X? thanks much!

You can close an active window with ALT-F4 or you can leave it open and move between open windows with ATL-TAB.

ok, the ALT-F4 works great to close the notepad window, but now i discover i STILL have to use the mouse to "put" my curser in the "platform" blank page in order to use control-V to copy my doc "normal". Does this make sense?
Is there a way to avoid using the mouse for this part?
Thanks for your help!

Try ALT-Tab to activate the platform window after you close notepad with ALT-F4 and see if that works for you. You may have to hit ALT-Tab several times if you have several programs running at once. I typically have 8 programs running when I'm working and use the ALT-Tab to move back and forth as needed.
