Okay you geeks, don't laugh too much. How do I put one of those cute little pictures in my profile? I really like Joi's new one.

I'm glad you like it. It actually looks something like I do in real life, so I figured it was the next best thing until I find a decent picture of myself to upload. Basically I found an image I liked in the public domain and saved it to My Pictures, which is a subset of My Documents in WinXP, by right-clicking on it, choosing Save Picture As . . . and naming it. If it isn't already a JPEG file, I make it one by opening it in Microsoft Paint and saving it again in the correct format. Then I need to upload it to the Web. I use the commercial photohost at Photobucket. One has to register an account there and read carefully the explanation of bandwidth limits. Another choice is to use the webpage editor offered by many ISPs and to host the photo there. After I save an image in Photobucket, it provides an URL to copy for each image. I then come to this forum or MTDesk or another place where I have the option to save a picture for my identity. This is usually done by editing my profile. On this forum I put the URL in the box labeled "I have my own pic," and that's all I need to do. Now the picture shows up under my screen name on every post. You might ask why you can't simply put in the URL for that particular picture. Do a Google search for "bandwidth theft" for an explanation. Here's one site that explains and shows what can happen to the images you select if you fail to save them to your own image host first: The Switcheroo. Give it a try, Debbie. Contact me if you have any problems, and I'll try to sort you out. If someone has a better explanation of the process by which one associates an image with one's board profile, please do post it.
