I just use my own expansions within the platform, but I have read about Smartype and wondered if it could be used within the platform or if you would have to transcribe into Word and then paste into the platform's ttranscription screen.

If you want to use Smartype, you must do your transcription in Word, then cut/paste into the platform's transcription screen. This is very easily done: simply Ctrl-A to select all of the document, Ctrl-C to copy, go to the platform window, and Ctrl-V to paste. Then upload via the platform. [Note added 8/29/04: I have since heard that some MTs have reported problems doing this in that it messes up the formatting that The Platform does on the back end. To eliminate this problem, if you absolutely need to use Word, you would have to do the work in Word, cut and paste the entire file into Notepad, then cut and paste the Notepad file into The Platform. Notepad uses a plain vanilla text format that ensures whatever is written in it will merge seamlessly with what is written in The Platform. This is why I advocate storing the Notepad version of your completed reports and storing your normals in Notepad form.]
Instant Text's most recent version works directly with the platform.
I prefer IT rather than Smartype because IT focuses on phrases instead of words; once you have typed the beginning of a sentence, it will suggest the most likely phrases which follow. IT refers to this process as continuations. Smartype focuses on words: this makes it an excellent product for newer MTs but less effective for the more experienced.
Another reason I like IT is their customer support. Stedman's is an excellent company, always produces great products and has quality customer support, but IT goes a giant step further by providing support forums and a plethora of articles for its customers to learn from.
See this example, which discusses the 2002 AAMT convention where a local MT demonstrated IT by transcribing a radiology account. At the end of the second day, statistics showed she had produced 9.8 characters per keystroke!

This link further describes the continuation feature of IT that I mentioned above:

The example shows how one can type 9 characters, tppw;;;;;, to produce 99 characters: The patient tolerated the procedure well and was brought to the recovery room in good condition.

I love Smartype with DOS & have a very old version. I am trying to learn IT with my new platform but I still love my Smartype for the other accounts I have which are not on the new platform yet.
